Although a lot of progress has been made in curtailing their releases from primary sources, heavy metals in developed and developing nations alike remain one of the most challenging environmental problems of this century. In fact, a historical threshold on heavy metals is being crossed – acute effects due to localized pollution problems are giving way to chronic toxicity endpoints (including endocrine, neurobehavioral and immune effects) associated with globalization of metal pollution. There is a clear need for a transdisciplinary forum where all aspects of current work dealing with heavy metal pollution and its ecological and health impacts can be discussed by experts from various parts of the world. This conference should fill this gap and will continue the tradition of highly successful meetings that have been held in many countries. Major themes for the conference .Risk assessment and risk management pertaining to toxic metals in the environment .Susceptibility and protection of children from toxic metals in their environment .Measurement and exposure assessment to heavy metals .Biomarkers of exposure and effects of heavy metals .Gene-environment-metal interactions .Trend Analysis – spatial and temporal .Risk communication .Life cycle analysis for metalliferous consumer products .Soil remediation and soil quality criteria .Crop and food safety related to heavy metals .Control strategies for heavy metal emissions and deposition .Metal mixtures – mechanistic and epidemiological studies
Welcome Invitation It is our pleasure, on behalf of the International Steering Committee of Heavy Metals in the Environment to introduce the 14th International Conference of Heavy Metals in the Environment (14 ICHMET) to be held at the GIS Convention Centre of National Taiwan University at Taipei, Taiwan, 16 to 23 November, 2008.
